How To Make Your Skin Healthy And Glowing No Matter Your Age
No one can prevent their skin from ageing. That’s an impossibility. The only thing we can do is to slow down its rate of advancement by doing a few simple, yet effective things. Great genes help too, but our own actions can do a lot to slow the process.
Here are few simple, yet effective ways to improve the condition of your skin;
1. Wearing sunscreen
Chances are you’ve heard it before, but wearing sunscreen daily is so important, it’s worth repeating three times. Why?
It prevents photoaging, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). Sun exposure causes all those skin imperfections you’re hoping to avoid: brown spots, rough texture, fine lines and wrinkles, and skin cancer.
“Sunscreen is one of the most important tools in preventing skin cancer,” says Ashley Wysong, MD, assistant professor of clinical dermatology at Keck School of Medicine of USC and a dermatologist at Keck Medicine of USC.
Avoid the sun during peak hours (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and wear sun-protective clothing, including wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses.
2. Wash your face regularly.
Use a gentle cleanser to remove sweat, dirt and grime, which can build up on your face throughout the day.
Cleansing prevents your pores from getting clogged and will allow your moisturizer to penetrate more readily (more on that below). If your skin is normal to oily, wash twice a day. If it’s dry, you can skip washing in the morning.
3. Wear moisturizer.
It’s a fact of life: Skin naturally gets drier as you age. Moisturizer helps lock water into your skin to prevent fine lines and wrinkles.
If you want to more aggressively target your wrinkles, opt for an anti-aging moisturizer with retinols. This derivative of vitamin A helps speed skin cell turnover for a more glowing complexion.
4. Eat the rainbow.
A varied diet of fruits and veggies, lean protein, whole grains and good-for-you fats gives your skin the vitamins, nutrients and fuels it needs to promote healthy skin, according to the AAD. A dietician or primary care doctor can help you make the best food choices for your skin and overall health.
5. Don’t smoke.
Need another reason to quit? Smoking makes you look older.
A study in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery compared sets of twins in which one was a smoker and one wasn’t. Time and time again, the non-smoking twin was younger looking, with less wrinkling and better skin laxity.
6. Get enough sleep.
Sleep isn’t just a time for your brain to turn off; it’s also when your skin renews itself. Need more proof? Just think back to the way you looked after your last all-nighter. Puffy eyes and blotchy skin are not hallmarks of youth.
