Systematic Way of How You Can Become Super Productive

Why most people suck at being productive is because they have a wrong idea about productivity. Most people confuse productivity with time management, in reality they are totally different concepts. Productivity is never about time, its about getting the maximum unit return on per unit of effort invested. Taking analogy of a vehicle, productivity is like the milage of a vehicle, i.e how many miles can a vehicle travel on per gallon of fuel.
Here is a systematic way of how you can become super productive;
1. Define your metrics:
i. The effort metric:
You might be a student, an employee or a businessperson and hence you might have different metrics for efforts and outcomes/results.
As a student, your effort metric might be the quality and focused time you would spend on studying.
For a businessman or an employee it might be the complexity and the task they are working on.
Do note here that time is not an effective metric, an hour of focused work/study session might be more effective than a 3 hour unfocused session.
Quality and complexity of work done is the metric you should look for.
ii. The result metric:
Now that we know what our effort metric is, we can now move towards measuring the result of what you get as an outcome.
For a student, it might be the percentage of syllabus studied, for an employee it might be the work done while for a businessman it could be the number of important daily goals accomplished.
Once you have both metrics in place, you might find that you can analyse and play around with them.
I understand that this might seem a bit superficial at the moment, hence lets take an example:
For all the geeks out there, here is a mathematical formula to measure productivity:

Productivity = Result Metric / Effort Metric.
Meaning, firstly you would have to identify the tasks which can drastically improve your results with the minimal effort required.
For example, a businessman wants to find a way to promote his brand.
Lets assume he has two options, one is to tie up with a big PR agency while the other alternative is to tie up with Instagram influencers.
Pursuing a PR agency would take a lot of effort and a significant investment, whereas he can easily tie up with influencers to get his brand to the public.
While the second strategy might get a bit less brand awareness but involves less effort and hence is more productive.
In a similar way, you may analyse what yields you the best return on your effort investment.
2. Avoid context switching:
You are at your desk, working peacefully for about 30 minutes.
Suddenly, there is an urge which makes you want to check out your Facebook notification.
You open up Facebook, see that there is no notification and get back to work within a few seconds.
You feel proud of yourselves of not lurking around Facebook wasting time.
But, there is a problem.
Shifting from one task to other, even for a short period of time reduces the performance drastically.
When you shift your focus from one task to other and then back to the first one, it involves a lot of effort for your mind to come back in the previous state.
This concept is borrowed from computer science and it is the process of storing the state of a process or of a thread, so that it can be restored and execution resumed from the same point later.
Try to completely finish the task at hand even before you move on or think about the next one.
3. Conserve energy:
As I mentioned earlier, productivity is not about time conservation, it is about effort/ energy conservation.
What I observe most people do is that they focus on saving time but they spend a lot of their energy in useless tasks.
Oh, this Youtube video is just 3 minutes, it wont hurt if I watch it. The reality though is that even if you spend just 3 minutes it drains a lot of your focus and energy.
Energy drain is also caused by things which constantly bother you, it might be a personal or a professional issue which bothers you at all time but it can be a huge energy drainer.
Make sure that your are not bothered by something similar, if so then make sure to get it sorted before you get to work or devote a specific time later in the day to resolve it.
4. Invest money in productive things:
Sometimes spending a bit of money on small things can drastically improve productivity.
For example, I always have a dual monitor setup at my home and office.
Studies found that there was a 35% increase in productivity when one uses a dual monitor setup.
For you it might be a different thing which may boost your productivity, for example a chef can increase his productivity by getting a better set of kitchen equipment.
Always invest in being productive, I assure you that you will get the best returns.
